I've been meaning to post about the passing of the great folk and civil rights singer Odetta since it happened earlier this month. Remember I posted about her a while back? I wish I had taken the time to get to know her sooner. I would've made an effort to see her in concert.Here's a link to a wonderful New York Times article (registration may be required). It includes a nicely done video interview. I love the part where she explains why work songs are songs of freedom, rather than solely the vocalization of slavery.

Always one of my favorite singers. I was lucky enough to see her perform years and years ago at the Troubador Club in LA. She was brilliant. The crowd was breathless while she sang. Magic.
The NYT video was actually deliberately shot to be her "oral obituary". Befitting. Very beautiful tribute.
