Check a dollar store for shelf liner paper ... I found some nice rolls there!
Have fun decorating! Re your earlier mention of a lamp that needed a new wire - it's incredibly easy to replace the wiring on most lamps. All you need is a regular screwdriver. There are How-To books at the library so you don't have to buy one to read that page.
